Up-cycle Plates from Drab to WOW!

Today I am showing you how to Up-cycle Plates from Drab to WOW! I decided to take some old plates that I picked up at a thrift store and use my Iridescent’s on them.

Making up-cycled plates are oh so easy to do. First, I used a foam brush and just dabbed on Lagoon Iridescents and waited for it to dry.

Then I used Earth Safe Finishes Gel Medium to apply a decorative piece of tissue paper and let that dry.

I applied a layer of Earth Safe Finishes Eco Epoxy following the manufacturer’s instructions and let that dry.

You can see on the picture above (if you look closely) the Eco Epoxy is not quite dry.

Although this picture does not do it justice, just look at that brilliant shine…..what will you update?

To get started you will need:

Ann Butler’s Background Basics Stamps by Clearsnap, assorted
Ann Butler’s Crafter’s Ink by Clearsnap, assorted colors
Colorbox Embossing Powder, Clear
Sharpie Fine Point Pen, Black
Marble Coasters
Heat Gun

Stamp with color of choice starting in a corner.

Sprinkle on embossing powder.

Heat set. Then continue until the entire tile is covered.

Add stitching lines with Sharpie.

That’s it…quick and easy!

Makin’s Clay®, heart cutter
Beaded Trim, Green and Pink, 6″
Matboard Tag, 1″ x 1 1/2″
Beacon Adhesives 527 Multi-use Glue
Colorbox Art Dauber
Paintbrush
Plastic wrap
VELCRO® Brand Picture Hanging Hooks

Paint the canvas with gesso. Let dry.
Stamp with Basket 2 in two opposite corners with Deep Woods. Heat Set.
Stamp with Basket around the edges of the canvas with Deep Woods. Heat set.
Place the Art screen in one corner, scrap Limelight Iridescents across and pull off quickly, repeat in the other corner. Let dry.

Roll clay out to 1/4″.

Stamp into clay with Berry ink.
Place plastic wrap over clay, use heart cutter. By using plastic wrap you have a nice rounded edge to the clay, giving it a nice finished edge.
Ink up the edges of the heart with Berry.
Glue heart to center of the canvas.
Stamp “I” and “U” on either side of the heart as shown in photo with Deep woods. Heat set.

Use the dauber with Desert Sand to stencil randomly onto the canvas. Heat set.

Apply Deep Woods to tag, front and back. Heat set.
Lightly apply some Limelight Iridescents to the front of the tag with your finger. Let dry.
Glue the tag to the back of the center top edge of the canvas, leaving 3/4″ extending.
Glue the beaded trim onto the bottom edge.
Hang wherever you desire with VELCRO® Brand Picture Hanging Hooks!

While ate the CHA Mega Show last week I had the opportunity to teach How to Create a Faux Quilted Memo Board in the Clearsnap Booth using my new line of Background Basics Stamps and My Crafter’s Inks….

The project I created was memo board as I was able to use all 8 of my new Background Basics Stamps and every color of my inks…plus it was a functional item that could be hung on a wall with VELCRO® Removable Picture Hangers.

Materials and Supplies:

Ann Butler’s Crafter’s™ Ink: Lilac, Sunshine, Berry, Limelight, Aquamarine, Tangelo, Sand, Canyon, Blueberry, Deep Woods, Ocean Breeze and Evergreen

Ann Butler’s ColorBox® Background Basics Stamps: 3” Square – Double Diamonds, Picnic, Squares and Basket

Ann Butler’s ColorBox® Background Basics Stamps: 3” Triangle – Double Diamonds, Picnic, Squares and Basket

Art Canvas Board: 9” x 12”

Crystal Mesh; Connie Crystal: 2” x 2”

Beacon Adhesives Fabri-Tac™

Trim, white: 4 yards

Velcro® Picture Hangers, 4

Tools:

Westcott Brand Scissors, baby wipes, ruler, heat gun, pencil, push pins, paper towels

Instructions:

Find the center at the bottom of board and stamp one square in color of choice, with a point of the square at the bottom edge.
Stamp a second square above the first in color of choice, see photo.
Stamp the third and fourth square on either side of the first two squares in colors of choice. You will now have a large 6” square in the center of the board.
Align and stamp two more squares in colors of choice on either side on 6” square, see photo.
Stamp around the edges with the triangle stamps in colors of choice.
Glue trim on the back of the art board, bring across lines to cover where stamped patterns meet and glue onto the back side of the art board. Trim and repeat until all lines are covered.
Measure and cut 4 lengths of the trim adding two inches to each piece so that you will be able to glue the ends of the trim onto the back of the art board with each piece.
Add a small amount of glue to the bottom piece of trim where trim pieces cross.
Cut 6 pieces of crystal mesh two crystals by two crystals and glue on the top of the trim where the trim pieces cross, see photo.
Apply Velcro® Picture Hangers to the back of the art board according to manufacturer’s instructions.

Tips:

Heat set as needed.
Use baby wipes to clean off stamps before going into another color.

for the Summer issue of Bella Crafts Quarterly. These coasters make a wonderful gift so I thought I would take them one step farther and use ETI’s EnviroTex Lite® Pour-on High Gloss Finish to finish them off and give them a high gloss protective finish.

Supplies:

Ann Butler’s Fuax Quilting Stamps by Unity Stamp Company, assorted 1″ squares and triangles

Ann Butler’s EZ-De’s 2″ Flourish Alphabet

Ann Butler’s Iridescent’s by Earth Safe Finishes, berry, sky, lila

Ann Butler’s Crafter’s® Ink by Clearsnap, Evergreen

EnviroTex Lite® Pour-on High Gloss Finish

Earth Safe Finishes Gesso, white

Wood Coasters, 4″ x 4″

Tools:

Acrylic block

Disposable measuring cups (2)

Paintbrush

Heat gun

Painter’s tape

Wax Paper

Wooden stir stick

Scissor

Instructions:

Base coat the coaster with gesso. Let dry and repeat if needed.

Paint the coaster with Berry Iridescents. Let dry. Give the coaster a second coat. Let dry.

Stamp in the corner with one of the 1″ Faux Quilting Squares in Evergreen.

Place two 1″ triangle stamps onto the acrylic block to form a square and stamp right below the first square in Evergreen.

Continue stamping around the outer edge of the coaster to create a boarder. Heat set the ink.

Stamp desired initial in the center with Evergreen. Heat set.

Pictured above is another coaster with Iridescents in Sky.

Tape around the edges of the coaster (to prevent the resin from dripping). Lay out some wax paper, then place the coaster on something (I am using the Iridescents jar), to elevate it.

Mix EnviroTex Lite® as directed on the package. Measure equal parts resin and hardener in 2 separate cups. (I mixed 1 ounce resin with 1 ounce hardener which covered 3 coasters nicely).

Pour the hardener into the resin and mix thoroughly for 2 minutes.

Pour mixture into the second cup and stir for another minute.

Pour resin onto the coaster.

Use the stir stick to bring the resin to the edges, (the resin is self leveling). Watch for any bubbles to rise and blow lightly to disperse them. Let dry undistributed for 12 hours, and then peel the tape away.

Trim resin away from the edges if needed. Let cure for 72 hours.

You can see the beautiful shine….

99 Handmade Gift Ideas Blog Hop – Faux Quilted Pillow

I love making projects that are quick and easy yet look like they took more time to make then they actually did. This Faux Quilted Pillow is a perfect example and would make a wonderful gift. It was inspired by a Quilted Pillow created by my creative girlfriend Rebekah Meier for a blog hop using my Faux Quilting line of rubber stamps from Unity Stamp Company …..you can check out her pillow here!

Materials:

Ann Butler Crafters Ink by Clearsnap: Aquamarine Berry, Sunshine, Lilac, Tangelo, Limelight
Warm & Natural Batting by The Warm Company: 13″ x 13″ (2), 4″ x 4″

Tools:
Westcott Brand Non Stick Scissors, needle, thread, sewing machine (optional), baby wipes, acrylic block, ruler, iron

Instructions:

Gather you supplies

Attach desired stamps to an acrylic block and stamp out pattern with stamps on a 14″ square piece of fabric; heat set with an iron.

You can check out a video on how to do this by clicking here!

Layer stamped fabric with batting and a piece of muslin then quilt together

by stitching between the stamped blocks and diagonally if desired.

Trim to 12″ x 12″. Thread 6 strands of floss and stitch through the center of the block,

doing so now is easier then once the pillow is stuffed.

Press Steam-A-Seam onto second piece of batting, peel paper layer and attach to muslin, iron together.

Put right sides together (batting side of batting piece and stamped side of quilted piece);

stitch together with a 1/2″ seam allowance, leaving a 4″ opening for turning.

Turn to the right side, stuff with poly-fil and stitch opening closed.

Stamp onto one of the 4″ square pieces of muslin, iron to heat set.

Fold into eight’s and cut into circle shape.

Layer this with 4″ square batting and muslin.

Sew together with free motion.

Zig-Zag around the outside edge.

Stitch through circle piece and button and tie off tightly.

For a second look…..

Place the loop side of the VELCRO® Sticky Back for Fabrics onto the back side of circle.

Place the hook side onto one end of the 1″ x 22″ piece of muslin;

wrap around pillow and repeat.

By using the VELCRO® Sticky Back for Fabrics you will be able to have the band on or

remove as desired giving you two looks for one pillow!

Makin’s Clay® Quilted Stamped Bracelet

Today I am sharing a Makin’s Clay® Quilted Stamped Bracelet that is oh so easy to do. By now most of you know that I love Makin’s Clay® and my color of choice is usually black. I like to add color in either powders or inks to create a rich color but, for this project, I decided to start with white clay and use my Crafter’s Inks to give it color…

and created this Quick and Easy Stamped Bracelet…

I started by rolling the clay out to about 1/8″ thick; 2″ wide by 8″ long.

I placed an assortment of my 1″ square Faux Quilting Stamps by Unity Stamp Company diagonally onto the clay…

and pressed each lightly into the clay to make an impression.

Then I trimmed the excess clay away…

on both of the long ends.

I applied my Crafter’s Ink in Tangelo, Limelight and Sunshine randomly over the clay…

and blended the ink with art daubers; I also inked and colored the backside. Then I let the clay dry for a couple hours.

I used Westcott Non-Stick Scissors to cut the clay to size.

Then I attached VELCRO® Sticky Back Adhesive with a dab of Beacon Tacky Glue for a secure bond to the ends of the clay to create the bracelet, letting the glue dry completely.

There you have it a Quick and Easy Stamped Clay Bracelet!

Cool2Cast Ann Butler Designs Blog Hop Canvas

I am excited to be doing this blog hop with my Creative Girlfriend Tiffany Windsor and her fabulous product Cool2Cast. If you have not yet seen or tried Cool2Cast check out Tiffany’s YouTube Channel, it is filled with projects showcasing this Cool product along with how-to videos for getting perfect results.

I created this Mixed Media Canvas using the Cool2Cast and my Faux Quilting Stamps from Unity Stamp Company.

Here’s How:

I chose to use a heart silicone mold I found in the dollar section of a discount store to create my tiles. The one inch Faux Quilting Stamps fit into the top part of the hearts perfectly.

I mixed 2/3 cup of the Cool2Cast with 1/3 cup of water into a ziplock bag for about a minute. Then I cut a corner from the end of the bag and poured the Cool2Cast over the stamps into the mold.

I tapped the mold gently to remove a couple air bubbles and left the mold exactly where it was for one hour.

Then I turned the mold over and popped the pieces out.

The 4 hearts at the bottom of this picture were done without a stamp and came out perfectly shaped and smooth. The hearts that you see cracked are also perfect as they have the stamps in them, there is just a thin little layer of Cool2Cast that seeped under the stamp; to prevent this you can add a glue dot on the stamp before placing it into the mold. All I did was peel that thin layer away because…..

I knew I was going to be removing part of the heart to get the square shape of the stamps and that thin layer did not affect the cast of the stamp image. I was able to easily trim the excess heart away with a scissor right after I took them out of the mold to get the shape I wanted. I set those aside to harden overnight.

I used an 8″ x 10″ Canvas from Canvas Corp.

I added tissue paper with some Earth Safe Finishes Gel Medium and let it dry. Then I painted over it with Ann Butler Designs Iridescents in Limelight and let it dry.

I used PicMonkey.com to create the saying I wanted and then I printed it out onto Grafix Arts Vellum.

I pressed the top and sides of the Cool2Cast Quilt Squares I made into Ann Butler Designs Crafter’s Ink from Clearsnap in Berry then I heat set them with a heat gun.

After the squares were heat set I added a coat of Ann Butler Designs Iridescents in Berry to give them just a bit of shimmer. In the example photo above there are 3 Cool2Cast hearts, the first one is painted with one layer of Iridescents in Berry, to cover it nicely without a base coat it would take 2 or 3 applications. The second heart has the Crafter’s Ink in Berry, which is a matte finish. This would be perfect the way it is but I wanted just a bit of shine which is why I added the Iridescents over the the top, which is the third heart…..with the Crafter’s Ink as the base coat I only needed a light application of the Iridescents to give the heart the look I was going for.

Tiffany offers pre-cast pieces of Cool2Cast on the Cool2Cast web site and pictured above is one of those pieces, a beautiful heart which I painted with Iridescents in Limelight for the center and in Berry around the edges. At this point I was not sure which hearts I would use so I wanted to have them all ready when I assembled the canvas.

Once I was happy with the arrangement on the canvas I used a piecing tool to poke a hole in the canvas and vellum and placed brad in each corner to hold it in place. I decided to add just a touch of Crafter’s Ink in Night (black) onto the tops of each of the Cool2Cast Quilt Squares and the heart to give them some depth. Then I added some around the edges of the canvas also. I glued all of the Cool2Cast pieces in place.

Then I had the perfect silk ribbon to add to the bottom of the canvas.

I hung the canvas onto the wall with VELCRO® Brand Removable Picture Hangers.

I simply love how this turned out!

Ann Butler Design’s Walnut Hollow Blog Hop

Welcome to the Ann Butler Designs and Walnut Hollow Blog Hop!

I am so delighted to be doing this blog hop with my Design Team and Walnut Hollows Team! Everyone was able to pick something from Walnut Hollow to decorate with the Ann Butler Design’s products from Unity Stamp Company, Clearsnap Inc and Earth Safe Finishes!

I chose to make some Garden Stakes for our Herbs, since it is not always easy for me to remember which is which.

Supplies:

Shrink Film; Clear by Grafix®

Westcott Cutting Mat

Paint Brush
Heat Gun

To get a deep rich color from the Iridecents™ Paint try base coating several of the stakes with different colors of Chalk It Up, you will be surprised at the different results you can get….from left to right: Plum Preserves, Whipped Cream, English Tea Cake, Licorice and then I let them dry.

I applied the Iridescent’s in Limelight to each stake to determine the color combination I wanted to go with….you can see the beautiful iridescent color on each of these stakes, all just a bit different in color because of the Chalk It Up base coat. You can also use the Iridescent’s™ Paint directly to the wood if desired.

Next I cut a piece of the Shrink Film 2″ wide by 11″ long and stamped out the word chives.

Punch a hole just above the first letter and trim off excess if needed. Hold the Shrink Film in place with the tweezers and begin to shrink it with the heat gun, following the directions on the package.

Continue shrinking until done and place an object on it if needed to help flatten the Shrink Film. Let cool and remove the object.

Stamp stakes with 2″ leaves stamp from the Leaves all Over stamp set, heat set to dry.

Add the nail near the top of the stake and place the “Chives” Shrink Film onto the stake…..

Make these fun stakes for each herb in your garden and you will always know what you have! Enjoy!!

Create ART Everyday – Stenciled, Stamped and Inked Canvas

Today I am pleased and honored to be part of my Creative Girlfriend Rebekah Meier’s 1st Blog Hop for her Brand New Stencil Line with The Crafter’s Workshop.

These stencils are wonderful and I am happy to say that they work beautifully with my line of Crafter’s Ink from Clearsnap. I created this Art Canvas for my studio by stenciling, stamping and inking it up!

Here’s how I created it:

I started by painting 2 canvases from Canvas Corp, (one 8″ x 10″ the other 5″ x 7″) with Berry Iridescents from Earth Safe Finishes.

I used Crafter’s Ink in Aquamarine, Lilac and Bark with Rebekah’s Rosetta and Stain Glass Stencils, layering with Earth Safe Finishes Gesso and more of the Berry Iridescents covering up a bit of the stenciling in the process. I also heat set the Crafter’s Ink once I was happy with placement, the cool thing about this ink is that if you ink something up and do not like how it turned out just take a baby wipe and remove it before heat setting….now that is cool!

I stamped out “Create ART” and “Every Day” with EZ-De’s 2″ Flourish Alphabet Stamps onto tissue paper to fit the canvases with Bark ink and heat set.

I applied the stamped tissue paper to the canvases using Earth Safe Finishes Decoupage bringing the tissue paper down over the edges of the canvases, let dry.

I stenciled in several move places onto the canvases to give more depth. Then I put the two canvases together and stenciled over the two two of them where they would meet when hanging for a continuous pattern, heat set.

I had these great metal photo corners I wanted to use although they were different colors….

So the solution was simple, I used Crafter’s Ink in Berry to color the photo corners, then I heat set, applied some Berry Iridescents on the top to highlight and added some Crafter’s Ink in Bark to the edges and heatset again. Then I glued them onto the corners of the canvases with Beacon’s Adhesives Quick Grip.

I also stenciled the sides of the canvases and inked up the edges.

I drilled holes into the bottom of the “Create ART” canvas and added eye screws then I drilled two holes in the top of the “Every Day” canvas added open ended eye screws so that they will attach easily to each other.

I hung them onto the wall using VELCRO® Brand Removable Picture Hangers…

Layering the stencils and using several colors of ink gave this project depth and I loved how it turned out
